What size rug for a living room? For most UK homes, 160x230cm is the right size. It’s big enough for the front legs of your sofa and armchairs to sit on it, and that one detail is what makes a seating area look like it belongs together. Small rooms often suit 120x170cm. Open-plan spaces usually need 200x290cm or bigger.
That’s the short answer. The right size for your room depends on the layout and the sofa, so here’s how to check before you buy.
What’s the most common rug mistake?
Buying too small. A rug that floats in the middle of the floor, with the furniture arranged around it instead of on it, makes the room look smaller and slightly unfinished. We see it all the time. If you’re stuck between two sizes, go for the bigger one.
How do you measure a living room for a rug?
- Measure the seating area, not the whole room. Run a tape from the back of the sofa to the far edge of the chairs or coffee table, then across the width of the seating.
- Leave some bare floor round the edge. In a larger room, around 45cm between the rug and the walls looks right. In a small room you can go down to about 20cm.
- Mark it out with masking tape. It takes two minutes and you’ll know straight away whether the size works. It also saves a return: rugs can be sent back within 7 days if you change your mind, but there’s a £30 processing fee plus the cost of sending it back.
- Check the doors. Make sure any door that opens into the room still clears the rug, especially if you’re looking at a thick, high pile.
What size rug for a living room: sizes compared
| Rug size | Best for | How the furniture sits |
|---|---|---|
| 120x170cm | Small living rooms, snugs, flats | Under the coffee table, sofa just off it |
| 160x230cm | Most UK living rooms | Front legs of sofa and chairs on the rug |
| 200x290cm or 200x300cm | Larger rooms, corner and L-shaped sofas | Front legs on, or every leg on in a roomy layout |
| 240x340cm | Open-plan spaces | Marks out the living zone inside a bigger room |
Should the sofa sit on the rug?
The front legs should, ideally. That anchors the sofa and ties it to the chairs opposite. All four legs on the rug looks good too, but only if the rug is big enough to leave floor showing around the edges. The layout to avoid is the sofa completely off the rug with the rug stranded in the middle.
How big should a rug be compared with the sofa?
At least as wide as the sofa, and preferably 15 to 20cm wider on each side. A three-seater of around 200cm pairs well with a 160x230cm or 200x290cm rug laid lengthways in front of it.
What size rug for a small living room?
A 120x170cm rug under the coffee table, with the sofa just behind it, is the usual answer. But if you can get the front sofa legs onto a 160x230cm, try it. A slightly larger rug often makes a small room feel bigger, because the furniture shares one base instead of sitting in separate islands. Have a look through our small rugs if space really is tight.
What size rug for an open-plan room?
Here the rug’s job is to say “this bit is the living room”. Go for 200x290cm or larger, and make sure every piece of the seating group touches it. Our extra large rugs go up to 240x340cm. A runner, such as a 68x240cm, can then lead from the living area to a hallway or kitchen without chopping up the floor. You’ll find those in runner rugs.
Round, square or rectangular?
Rectangular, for most living rooms, simply because sofas are rectangular. A round rug works under a round coffee table or in a reading corner. Square rugs suit square rooms and modular sofas arranged in a U.
Whatever shape you pick, put an underlay beneath it. It stops the rug creeping across a wooden or laminate floor and takes some of the wear. Our rug buying guide covers materials and pile if you’re still choosing a style, and if you’re drawn to colour, our guide to green rugs for the living room is a good place to start.
Quick answers
What is the most common living room rug size?
160x230cm. It’s also the size we stock in the most designs, because it fits an average room and works with a standard three-seater.
Can a rug be too big?
Yes. If it runs right up to the skirting boards it starts to look like fitted carpet. Keep a visible border of floor.
What size rug goes under a coffee table only?
120x170cm for most tables, or 80x150cm for a small one.
What size rug for a large living room?
200x290cm or 200x300cm, so that all the seating can sit at least partly on it.
