KITCHEN BLINDS
Kitchen blinds have to cope with steam, grease and splashes and still let in plenty of light for cooking. The best choices are wipeable fabrics, slim rollers that sit neatly over a sink and wood-effect venetians that stand up to a busy family kitchen. If the window is tucked behind a tap or over a worktop, ask about our local installation service.
The window over the sink
This is the hardest-working window in most homes. You lean across a worktop to reach it and it gets splashed every time you wash up. A roller with a side chain is easy to work from a distance, and a wipeable fabric means marks come off in seconds. Keep the drop short enough that the bottom bar clears the tap. Our waterproof blinds are the toughest option for this spot. A fabric Roman is fine on a window away from the sink and hob, but near water or cooking it will mark quickly.
Light, heat and the cooker
Kitchens need good daylight, so a light filtering fabric that softens glare without darkening the room is usually right; a dark blind on a small kitchen window makes the room feel cramped. Never hang a fabric blind close to a gas hob, and leave a clear gap from the extractor. A back door into the garden is better with a vertical blind that draws to one side. For a wood look that copes with steam, try faux wood blinds, and for a softer finish at the dining end, see our kitchen curtains.
