How To Measure Your Curtains
How To Measure
- If no track or pole is in position, fit this prior to measuring for your curtains.
- Only use a metal measuring tape and record your measurements in mm.
- Measurements must be exact for an accurate result. We will make the necessary allowances to your measurements to ensure a correct fit.
- Always measure the width first (across the window) and then the drop (top to bottom).es.
- Record your measurements in the same order.
- Check for any obstructions your curtains need to go around or over (e.g. a window handle). This may change where you fit your track or pole.
- Finally, re-check your width and drop measurements to ensure accuracy.
Measuring For Your Width
Curtain Track
Measure from end to end and record this as your width (e.g. 1000mm), as shown in PIC 1.
Curtain Track with an Overlap
Measure the width track (PIC 2) and add the track overlap dimension to the overall track measurement to give a final measurement. (e.g. 1000mm + 100mm + 100mm = 1200mm).
Wave Curtain
We provide a track with all wave heading curtains. Measure where you want the track to be fitted. The track width will be the curtain width measurement we need.
Note: Never provide the curtain size you require. Our curtains are made to fit the track/pole size provided.
Measuring for your Drop
Eyelet Curtain
Measure from the top side of the pole to the desired length and record as your drop measurement. Measure in three places (left, middle and right) and record the shortest measurement. (e.g. PIC 1 your measurement will be 1500mm).
Note: Eyelet curtains will fit poles up to 35mm (40mm eyelets) or 45mm (50mm eyelets) in diameter. The overall drop will be made 30mm longer to allow the curtain to stand off the pole. There will always be an even number of eyelets per curtain.
Pencil Pleat/Pinch Pleat Curtains
First decide whether you want to cover the track/pole with the curtains, or if you want the curtains to sit under the track/pole (on the ring).
Cover Track/Pole: Measure from the top of the track/pole to where you
want the curtains to finish. Measure in three places and provide the shortest measurement. (e.g. PIC 1 your measurement will be 1500mm)
Under Track: Measure from the ring or hook down to where you want
the curtains to finish. Measure in three places and provide the shortest
measurement (e.g. PIC 2 your measurement will be 1500mm)
Wave: A wave header needs a special track to create the wave effect that’s why we supply the track with the order. The measurement you supply includes the track. The track will be visible when fitted. Measure from where the top of the track will be fitted down to your desired drop. Measure in three places and provide the shortest measurement.
Measuring for your Drop
Always follow the measuring and fitting instructions provided with the pole or track.
If there is space around the window, we recommend an overlap of 200mm-300mm at each side and above the window (e.g. A, B, C measurements).
Note: We strongly advise you to measure and fit your track before measuring for curtains.
Measuring for your Bay Window
Measuring the Width for a Bay Window
Without a track or pole in position: If a pole or track needs to be fitted, follow the manufacturers recommendations on how to measure and fit. Each manufacturer will have slightly different instructions on measuring and fitting the track or pole.
Once the track or pole is fitted, or if you already have one
in position, follow the instructions below:
Curtain Track
Measure from end to end (PIC 1) and record this as your width
measurement (Please record your measurements in mm).
Curtain Pole
Measure between the two finials (PIC 2) and record this as your width measurement (Please record your measurements in mm).
Note: Not all poles for bay windows are suitable to have eyelet heading curtains. This is due to the way the pole is fixed to the wall. Please check corners/joins to ensure eyelets can be fed along the pole.
Measuring Drop for Eyelet Curtains
Measure from the top side of the pole to the desired length and record as your drop measurement. Measure in three places (left, middle, and right window) and record the shortest measurement. (e.g. PIC 1 your measurement will be 1500mm).
Note: Eyelet curtains will fit poles up to 35mm in diameter. The overall drop will be made 30mm longer to allow the curtain to stand off the pole. There will always be an even number of eyelets per curtain.
Measuring Drop for Pencil Pleat/Pinch Pleat Curtains
First decide whether you want to cover the track/pole with the curtain, or if you want the curtains to sit under the track/ pole (on the ring).
Cover Track/Pole: Measure from the top of the track/pole to where you want the curtains to finish. Measure in three places and provide the shortest measurement. (e.g. PIC 1 your measurement will be 1500mm).
Under Track: Measure from the ring or hook down to where you want the curtains to finish. Measure in three places and provide the smallest measurement (e.g. PIC 2 your measurement will be 1500mm).
How To Measure Your Blinds
How To Measure
- Only use a metal measuring tape and record your measurements in mm.
- Measurements must be accurate for a perfect fit. We will make the necessary allowances to ensure the blind fits the window.
- Decide on how you want the blind fitted – ‘Inside Recess’ is within the window frame or ‘Outside Recess – Exact Size’ is to your desired point on the wall outside of the window frame.
- Always measure the width first (across the window) and then the drop (top to bottom) in 3 places.
- Record your measurements in the same order.
- Look for any obstructions such as handles. You will need to take their position into account to ensure a perfect fit.
- Finally, re-check your width and drop measurements to ensure accuracy.
Inside Recess
Measure at the 6 positions shown (3 horizontal, 3 vertical) and record the smallest dimension as the ‘Recess Size’. (e.g. in PIC 1 your width measurement will be 918mm and your drop measurement is 993mm). Provide the width measurement first.
Exact (outside recess)
Decide where the blind will be fitted outside of the window opening. Check for any obstructions such as a window sill or window handle. Start with the width and measure the area you want the blind to cover, we recommend an overlap of at least 100mm on each side.
For the drop measure at least 100mm above and below the window (if space allows). Record both measurements and order an Exact fitting and we make the blind to fit the window area. (e.g. in PIC 2 width measurement will be 920mm and drop measurement will b e 994mm).
Square Bay Window
To create a perfect fit please follow the step-by-step guides:
Step 1. Find the head rail depth of your chosen blind in the chart provided below.
Step 2. Measure the central window (measurement A) from left to right and deduct the head rail depth twice from this measurement. E.g. for roller classic, deduct 110mm from this measurement.
Step 3. Measure sides (B and C) into the back corners of the bay. This will be the width of the rail.
Step 4. Deduct the head rail depth off measurement B and C. E.g. for roller classic, deduct 55mm from each measurement.
Step 5. Order all three blinds as an exact measurement.
Step 6. For the drop, measure from where you want the top of the blind to be, to where you want it to finish. If you measure to the sill, deduct 10mm to allow the blind to move freely.
Note: If window handles protrude, take the measurement of the projection and add to each measurement A, B and C (if applicable).
Head Rail Depths
| Roller Classic | 55mm |
| Roller Cassette | 80mm |
| Roman Classic | 48mm |
| Roman Cassette | 80mm |
| Fifty50TM | 80mm |
| Vertical Classic Top Fix | 50mm |
| Vertical Classic Face Fix | 100mm |
| Vertical Cassette | 80mm |
TIP
For both the width and drop measurements, measure in three places for each window. For the width, measure top, middle and bottom and for the drop measure left, middle and right. Your window might not be square, so always give us the smallest measurement.
Angle Bay Window
The trick to measuring angled bays is to make a template. Follow our step-by-step guide:
Step 1. Find the head rail depth of your chosen blind in the chart provided (please refer to the previous page “measuring your blinds – Square Bay Windows”).
Step 2. Place two pieces of paper together. Using the head rail depth as your measurement, mark each piece of paper with a line in the same position.
Step 3. Position your pieces of paper on the window sill and ensure both the line marks meet up as shown.
Step 4. Using a pencil, mark the window sill where the edge of the paper meets the sill.
Step 5. Do this for both corners of the bay.
Step 6. Measure between each section as shown below. This will determine the width of each blind needed. All blinds should be ordered as exact (A, B & C measurements).
Step 7. For the drop measure from where you want the top of the blind to be down to the sill or floor.
TIP
For both the width and drop measurements, measure in three places for each window. For the width, measure top, middle and bottom and for the drop measure left, middle and right. Your window might not be even, so always give us the smallest measurement.
